What it’s actually like?

Most people describe it as a rubber band flicked against the skin, with a bit of heat behind it. The sapphire tip on the handpiece is chilled, which takes a lot of the sting out. More than one person has told us it was gentler than they had braced themselves for.

Some areas are sharper than others. The upper lip and the bikini line are the two people mention. Underarms take about ten minutes. Full legs take about forty.

Afterwards the area looks a bit like mild sunburn for a few hours. You can go straight back to work. What you cannot do is get hot for 24 hours either side. No gym, no sauna, no hot showers.

The hair doesn’t fall out on the day. It sheds over the following one to three weeks, and it goes patchy before it goes smooth. That stage is completely normal, and it’s the part nobody warns you about.

Allow 30 to 45 minutes, and it’s free. We look at your skin and hair, go through your health and medication, then fire a few test shots on a small area.

Six to eight for most people and most areas. Coarse, dark hair on light skin responds fastest. We give you a realistic number at the patch test rather than an average.

Only if there’s pigment in the hair for the laser to target. Dark hair responds best. Ginger, grey and blonde hair does not respond well, especially when it is lighter than your skin, and we will not pretend otherwise.

It is permanent reduction, not permanent removal. Expect 80–90% less hair, with an annual top-up to hold it.

Usually, yes. As the hair thins out there’s less to grow back into the skin, and most people find ingrowns and shaving rash stop being a problem after two or three sessions.

No, and that is not us pushing you to spend more. One session of laser does very little on its own, because it only affects the hairs that happen to be in the right growth phase that week. Selling you a single session would be selling you a disappointment, so we price in courses of three and six and nothing smaller.

No. We don’t treat during pregnancy — not because it is proven unsafe, but because it isn’t proven safe and hormones make results unpredictable anyway.

No, and that includes fake tan, gradual tanners and tanning pills, not just real sun. A tan changes how the laser reads your skin. Leave four weeks after sun or a sunbed, and two weeks after fake tan, and don’t top your tan up between sessions.
